CW ads raise eyebrows

Network releases nude publicity photos

When it comes to The CW promos, I almost expect to be shocked at this point. Last year the ads for the sophomore season of Gossip Girl bordered on pornographic; this year the new Melrose Place ads feature blurbs such as "Ménage a Tues."

But yesterday an email from the network came across my inbox that did, in fact, shock me. The subject line read, “The CW wants to know …”

Inside were two simple lines and a link:

“What are you looking at?

Could it be … this new artwork from The Beautiful Life: TBL, premièring Wed., Sept. 16 (9-10pm).”

When I clicked on the link, my jaw dropped. It revealed four black and white posters, each featuring one of the series’ young stars, buck naked in suggestive poses, with a black and red banner pasted over their lower regions reading “The Beautiful Life: TBL. What are you looking at?”

It wasn’t the nudity that I found shocking so much as the fact that the series’ lead, Sara Paxton, looks like she’s 18 (she is, in fact, 21) and that this is a network themed towards younger audiences.

It’s also the same network that features a Melrose Place spinoff with a cast member, Katie Cassidy, who wasn’t allowed to watch the original because it was too grown-up for her, yet she now portrays a “trisexual. She’ll try anything,” according to the producers.

I’ve never considered myself a prude, but I guess I’m showing my age since I feel these ads are a tad inappropriate for young girls. The Beautiful Life: TBL airs on A in Canada.
